Scottville/Ludington

Nothing much happened yesterday. Kathy did more inputting of campers/parents evaluation forms and I painted a 2nd finish coat on the Norway mens room. I tried to get a 2nd coat on the ladies side but after getting fresh paint in my paint pan, and all ready to go into the ladies side, one one of the TST leaders came in and asked if I was going to paint. I said yes but asked what she needed. She had around 20 TST girls who wanted to take showers. I put my paint back in the pail, cleaned up and left.

I went down to the site office and to kill time I checked the oil and gassed up 10-15 of the 35 golf carts that are on site. At 3:00 I set in on a site department meeting to discuss the condition of the campground area. There are some problems with the campground, namely they don't have enough electrical capacity when they are full of campers during holiday weekends. This would be a HUGE upgrade, and one that would be hard to justify the expense.

One of my "must dos" today was to get a haircut. We had located a barbershop in Evart that opened at 8 on Saturday. I went up to have breakfast at the dining room and all they had this morning we cereal and fruit. I went to Evart and had breakfast at a restaurant next to the barbershop. I finished breakfast and was at the barbershop at 8:15; IT IS CLOSED UNTIL TUESDAY! I still have long hair.

Today we went to Scottville and Ludington. Our plans were to hit the Western Michigan Old Engine Club in Scottville, then to Historic White Pine Village in Ludington, and finally to the Lake Michigan beach.

We stopped at the Farmer's Market in Scottville and then went to the see the Old Engine Club. WE WERE BLESSED. This weekend was their annual get together. There was all kind of things going on, we had a really good time.

Below are some photos of just a few of the many interesting things we saw.

Kathy and I thought about taking a ride on the "train". I was pretty sure I could get into one of the cars, but probably could not have gotten out. Actually it wasn't running.

There were a lot of "doodlebugs" running around the site. This is just one of them.

We watched a threshing demonstration, which I had seen before. But then they baled the straw using this stationary baler. It kicked out normal size bales (normal for those of us who have spent time loading wagons behind a baler). The bales were manually wired tied. It was pretty interesting watching the guys do that.
Probably the most interesting thing to me was the saw mill. A bunch of old men turned logs into planed boards while we watched.

This young man was making a bowl on a treadle lathe. Sadly he was one of the few young people involved in the activities.

This guy made all kinds of things out of old sewing machines.

This was an entire exhibit of old washers. At the far end the unit looked like a horizontal 35 gal drum with part of the side cut out of it. It probably has some baffles in it because the water sloshed pretty good as it rotated back and forth.
I'm not sure how well this bike mower might have worked.
This was a Rube Goldberg set up. It was amazing how many different things this man had running off one small engine.
David, Downtown in Scottville there were sidewalk sections imprinted with fish. This might be a stampcrete pad that people around the lake would be interested in.
We saw these old sailing ships at the waterfront in Ludington. They had just completed a mock battle. Unfortunately we missed the battle.

We didn't take any photos at White Pine Village but it was also very interesting. They had a young man who was "blacksmithing", making different sorts of things.

When we got back "home" Kathy fixed some of the sweet corn we got at the Farmer's Market along with some ring baloney she got when she went to Ebel's with Cindy & Nancy. We head a very good day.

Good night and may God bless you and yours.
