Didn't Close Today - God Had Other Plans

We didn't close on the house today, because God had other things for us to do.

I had an appointment with my Endocrinologist (diabetes doctor) this morning. All good news. I have lost 10# since my last visit, BP was 120/70 & my pulse was 68. At my last appointment my A1c (a measure of average blood glucose levels over the past several months) was 6.0, which pleased Dr Meacham. My "family doctor" is happy with anything under 7.0. This time my A1c was 5.5. He is cutting back on some of the oral diabetes meds I take.

Just entering Lebanon on the Interstate I noticed a car off on the side of the road, with a tire laying on top of the roof. A mile or so later I saw a young (early 30's) couple walking back to the car. God nudged me to turn around and help them but I found excuses. I ran an errand and had breakfast at Denny's. God kept nudging me so I went over to Casey's, filled up with gas, and then went down to get on the Interstate at the fairgrounds exit. I saw the couple working on the front wheel of the car. I stopped on the ramp and walked over to see if I could help.

The front wheel had fallen off the car around 4:30 AM. Not one person had stopped to help them. A cop waved at them as he drove by. They had walked over to the Case dealer and borrowed a hammer. They had walked all the way to the Autozone store on 32 to buy new wheel studs and nuts and then walked back. They were walking back from Autozone when I saw them. I told them I could offer unskilled hands and the guy said that was great because he was a mechanic.

The couple and their two kids, 10 & 11, had went to Florida, from Wisconsin, for a vacation around 6 weeks ago. The guy had passed out while in FL and ended up having one of the valves in his heart replaced with a pigs valve. As I understood the situation he had been released from the hospital so that they could drive their 92 Bonneville back to WI. He is supposed to check in at a local hospital in WI as soon as he got home. He pulled up his tee shirt and showed Doug and I his scars.

He had taken off the rotor and his wife was trying to drive the studs out of the hub. I managed to get them driven out but when I didn't think I was going to be successful I called our son Doug, who ws at our house helping Kathy load things, and had him bring a better punch and more tools. After I got the new studs back in, and pulled through the hub far enough so that it would rotate we put tried to put the rotor back but he had broken one of the springs off one of the disc pads and we could not get it back in place. I took him to the parts store and bought them a cheap set of disc pads. We finally get the rotor back on when a guy in an INDOT truck stopped. He went to his home and came back with a floor jack so that we didn't have to use the wimpy screw jack to try and get the front end up far enough to get the tire back on. In the mean time the guy tried to start the car and it wouldn't even click. The flashers had worn the battery down to nothing. Doug pulled his car around and put jumper cables on but it took a LONG time to get enough charge in the guys battery to get the car started. (maybe we didn't have a good contact with the posts). We finally got it started, and the wheel back on and the INDOT guy block off the top of the on ramp so that we could all drive up it so that they did not have to go out on the Interstate.

I had them follow me to the Lebanon Goodyear place and told Tom the situation. Tom got it in a bay immediately, had his guys pull off the front tire and using a different nut, and an impact, they were able to pull the studs up tight. Tom didn't charge them anything.

Doug has suggested that they stop by our house and clean up before they headed down the road, and they wanted to do that. While at Goodyear she had called a relative who was supposed to send them some money at Walmart. I had them follow me to Walmart and we stood in the parking lot for nearly an hour while she tried to make an Uncle understand the situation and get him to send them some money. It appeared to me that he was going to do it but they were having a difficult time with logistics. By then it was 3 PM and they guy said there was no way they had time to stop for showers, they had to get to the hospital in WI. Both of them thanked me profusely and told me that they had imposed on me enough and that there was no reason for me to stay longer. I gave them 50 bucks and left. (I know that 50 bucks isn't even enough to fill their car up with gas but that was the number that was in my head).

By the way, I forgot to mention the fugitive ferret? Her ferret was loose somewhere in the car and they couldn't get it to come out and get back in the cage, assuming it was still in the car.

I'm not good at witnessing but did tell them not to thank me because if God had let me I would have passed them by just like all the others. I told them that He kept nagging at me until I had to go back and look for them.

The guy did not stand idly by and watch me work. I had to tell him to let me do things several times because I was sure he was doing things that would have given his doctor a coronary.

I'm pretty sure that at least part of what I heard from them was a load of hooey, but that isn't for me to worry about. They know that someone who called himself a Christian stopped to help them, because God made him. That has to give them something to think about.

Doug and I got a little to much sun while helping them. If you use Facebook check out his photo.

We are all loaded and pretty much ready to go as soon as we close on the house. I need to check pressures in all the tires, and put tools, etc back in the RV yet but everything from the house is done.

Goodnight to all and my God bless you and yours.
