Today's Travels

We have arrived back home after a good day of exploring.

We wandered through the country up toward  Falmouth. On the way, totally out in the country, we came across Pineview grocery. We stopped and went in and found that it was run by Amish or maybe Mennonites. They had quite a selection of goods. One young lady was restocking shelves and cleaning existing shelves and cans as she restocked. Two young barefoot girls, barefoot but wearing their white bonnets, were helping her. They appeared to be her daughters. All light in the place was provided by skylights but they were using electric cash registers and accepted both credit and debit cars.

We continued on to Falmouth, to visit Ebel's Family Center. http://www.ebelsgeneralstore.com/ It was interesting and well worth the drive. The main building is much larger than what is shown in the photo on the web site. Once we finished grocery shopping (we really didn't need anything since we eat all our meals at the Spring Hill dining room, but....) we went downstairs to the hardware store. It was AWESOME. The following is the view when you start down the steps to the basement.

This photo was taken while standing at one end and looking toward the other end. Yes those are cabinets full of guns at the far end.

When we pulled into the parking lot we noticed that the parking lot was shared with Duane's, a restaurant. It was only 11:15 but I talked Kathy in to checking it out. I had an 8 oz sirloin, home fries, two eggs, toast made from homemade wheat bread and Kathy had a cinnamon roll. My meal was excellent, especially the steak. We shared. The total cost of the meal was less than $10.

Next we drove to Cadillac. We didn't do much in Cadillac, other than make an appointment to take the RV up their next week and have the front end aligned. We will check it out more then.

From there we went to Manistee and spent some time wading in Lake Michigan. We had to laugh over our total unpreparedness. No sunblock, no swim suits, no towels, and I had left my had at Duane's restaurant. As hot as it was today it was nice at the lake. The temperature was only in the mid-seventies along the lake. It was in the 90's by the time we were an hours drive away from the lake.

We again wandered through the countryside on our way back to Evart (correct pronunciation is 'ev art'. The 'ev' sounds like that in Everett. Kathy wanted to get gas at a little countryside station but people has both sides of the pumps blocked. They weren't getting gas, don't know what they were doing. After a few minutes I talked her in to getting gas somewhere else. Then we got lost. Maybe not exactly lost but we sure did not follow any normal route getting to Baldwin. The route included about 10 miles of dirt roads. We now know that the 'miles to empty' counter on the CRV is not totally accurate. We drove at least 2 miles after it hit zero.

We had dinner at a restaurant between Reed City and Evart. Kathy had the cod and I had a beef manhattan. Her's was excellent, mine was OK. Portions were great. Kathy's cod came with a backed potato, corn and a trip to the salad bar. The meal cost us less than $16.

Time to watch a movie and hit the hay.

Good night to all.
