Screen Day
Yesterday, Friday, I took a break from painting and repaired screens. There are a LOT of screens on site. I "surveyed" the screens at Freedom Hall, in New Frontiers, the Farm Village and Fire Stations in Storybrook and Norway in Copper Country. Another volunteer and I, Jeff - a corporate attorney from Houston, TX (more on that later), replaced the damaged screens with new fiberglass screen material; except for Norway, we ran out of time. Kathy worked on payroll and filing.
Jeff and his wife are here as volunteers while their children are "guest" here this week. This is the first time Jeff has been here but his wife, and her sisters, used to come here as "guests". Jeff is a partner in a law firm that specializes in energy. We had a great discussion about "alternative" energy. His take is that ALL current forms of alternative energy (wind, solar, ethanol, biodiesel, etc) are government sponsored boondoggles of epic proportion. You would be absolutely astounded to learn of the hokey schemes people are concocting to get money/subsidies from government. These people will make money on these schemes but they will cost taxpayers many times more than those profits. We taxpayers would be better off if the politicians just stuffed these schemers pockets full of money so that they could get their bribes, oh wait - I meant campaign contributions from these schemers.
He told me of a web site that has great information on the actual relative cost of energy produced by conventional and renewable/alternative forms of energy. Wind is the only thing that even comes remotely close to producing energy at the cost of current fuels. (Nuclear is the least expensive.) He believes that natural gas will take over as the fuel for generating electricity. According to him, new drilling techniques have proven hugely successful in getting natural gas from old oil fields in PA. He said that MI & OH will be the next areas where the new techniques will be employed because the geology is similar to that in PA. He said people in PA are making a LOT of money from the natural gas being extracted from these old oil fields. When I have more time (being retired just takes up all your time <grin>) I will do a little research and maybe write a guest column on the subject for the Lebanon paper.
Gov Daniels plan to force Hoosiers to buy gas from the proposed coal gasification plant (the one that NO private investor thinks is feasible, even with a guarantee that forces Hoosier taxpayers to buy the gas produced) will cost Hoosiers a fortune.
On our way up here we drove through Ionia, MI. It looked like an interesting place so, since this is one of days off, we are driving back down there today to look around. Barb, the volunteer coordinator, has already told us that we HAVE to take Tuesday off also. She claims we are working to hard.
