Sault Ste Marie

This morning we packed up and left Newberry. We first went to the Upper Tahquamenon Falls and then drove out to Whitefish point.

We walked to the Falls, only a quarter of a mile from the parking lot, and then climbed down the 94 steps to get a better look. It is a pretty waterfall. What makes it more interesting is the differing shades of brown in the water. The brown color is caused by the tannic acid, from decomposing vegetation in the run-off area that feeds the river. The deeper the water, the browner the color. Even though the water appeared brown as it went over the falls, above the falls, where it was more calm, you could easily see the bottom of the riverbed.

Whitefish Point was not overly impressive. They wanted $16 each for tickets to get into the shipwreck museum and we didn't think there was anything in there that we wanted to see $32 worth. We did walk out to the water and I did some wading in Lake Superior, Kathy had waded in it over in Munising the day before. The water was chilly, but not terribly so.

After leaving there we stopped and had fish and chips at Brown's, a family run place that is 4 generations old. They clean and fillet the fresh fish at the back of the restaurant. The fish was great.

We continued on to Sault Ste Marie and arrived at a campground the Kathy claims is perfect. Actually it isn't quite perfect because they don't have sewer hook ups. They do have a bath house so you can use it to keep from filling your waste tanks and having to drive to the dump station to empty them. The front of our RV is parked about 50' from the St Marys river. It carries all the traffic in and out of Lake Superior. We are far enough downstream from the locks that we can't see them, but they aren't far away.

It was mid-70's today with a stiff breeze. Kathy wore a light jacket while we were sitting out front watching the freighters, sailboats, etc. go up and down the river. The neighbors on the east side of us were also sitting out. They had on long pants and coats. They are from central AZ. The neighbors on the west are from the Cape Cod, MA area. We only planned on staying here overnight because Kathy is supposed to help with registration at Spring Hill starting at 2:30 PM Sunday. We now think we may also stay Saturday night and leave early enough to get back to Spring Hill before 2:30. I think it is only around 4 hours of driving, almost all of it straight down I75. Kathy can hammer that out pretty quickly. She has done most of the driving the past several days, and I done the navigating.

Below are photos of Kathy sitting on on the seawall and one of her in one of our lawn chairs in front of the RV. You are looking at Canada on the other side of the river.

Tomorrow we will do some exploring around the city. Good night to all and may God bless you.
