Our First Day of Work

Kathy started in the kitchen at 7 AM. She took one 5 min break and another 10 min break during the morning. Other than that she was constantly busy. In the afternoon she was sitting outside the RV when Barb (the Volunteer Coordinator) walked by. They chatted a few minutes and Kathy asked Barb if there was anything she could be doing. She spent the next 2 hours deciphering kids handwriting, on evaluation forms, and inputting the data.

My day was not as hectic, although I am POOPED. I met Doug (Barb’s husband) for breakfast, actually I was done eating by the time he arrived, around 8 AM. He had been told that someone was picking up paint for me to use and that they would not arrive on site until around 9 AM. After he ate a quick breakfast we went to the “secret” coffee machine over in Storybrook (one of the 3 areas of the camp). The trials involved in getting the secret coffee machine to make coffee would take to long to tell.

After coffee we went to “Site”, which is the facilities management center of operations. Doug went to work and I visited with a couple of people who were working in the office, and visited, and visited, and visited…. Shortly after 11 AM Teri arrived with my paint supplies. I transferred the supplies, 5 gallons of primer, 5 gallons of finish coat, plus rollers, brushes, etc. into a pickup that was already headed towards the shower house in Meadowlands. (Meadowland is in Copper Country, the other area is New Frontiers) Teri and I used her golf cart for transportation. By the time we had things lined out it was around 11:30 and she suggested that she give me a ride back to the RV so that I could have lunch and then start after lunch. Sounded good to me.

Barb saw me eating lunch and asked about Kathy. I told her that Kathy would not leave the kitchen if there was something to do. Barb went back to the kitchen and “ordered” Kathy to come out and have lunch with us.

After lunch Barb walked me back to Meadowlands, although it was close enough that I would not have gotten lost. I spent the next 3.5 hours “mopping” the ceiling with a bleach/water mix, to get rid of the mildew. It wasn’t all that bad but it sure seemed like there was a lot of ceiling by the time I finished. Tomorrow I start priming and painting.

I’ve already written a book so I won’t go on and on about how impressed we have been by this place. More on that later.

It is only 7:10 PM but I’m hoping Kathy tells me that I have to go to bed <grin>.

PS. One couple looked at the house all morning, they had been there before, and I think they are the ones who are going to look at it again tonight. While we are not stressed about it, God will take care of things in His timing, it would be nice to get that "loose end" tied up.
